CONYERS April 27, 2004 — A 30-year-old Rockdale County woman narrowly escaped being murdered Tuesday night when her estranged husband’s loaded gun jammed as he pulled the trigger.
According to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), Timothy Jared Johnston, 33, of 669 Fincher Road, Covington, allegedly put a loaded .22-caliber revolver to the unnamed woman’s head and pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed and the woman was not injured.
The couple’s 2-year-old child was in the room at the time, according to reports.
The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. at the Terraces of Fieldstone apartment complex. Deputy Jodi Shupe said a 911 dispatcher received a call from the complex and could hear a woman talking in the background.
“She was making statements that caused concern to the dispatcher, but she hung up,” Shupe said, adding that it was RCSO policy to immediately dispatch a deputy to the address of a 911-hangup call.
“Meanwhile, the dispatcher called back to the residence, and the female advised everything was OK,” she said. “The dispatcher was still concerned, however.”
When the deputy arrived at the residence, he knocked at the door with no response and noted the door had been forced open, Shupe added.
“He pushed it and the door came right open,” Shupe said. “He noticed a small amount of blood located on the front porch. Upon checking inside the residence, he saw a large amount of blood on the living room floor, and he found a large kitchen knife with blood on it on the floor in front of the sofa.”
The deputy also found the holster for a small handgun on the living room floor, but found no one inside the residence.
Shupe said area hospitals were alerted to notify the RCSO should anyone come in seeking treatment for a wound.
“Around that same time, a couple arrived at Newton County Hospital,” Shupe said. “The man (Johnston) had a self-inflicted knife wound to his neck and the female was uninjured.”
When investigators arrived at the hospital, the woman advised them she had initiated divorce proceedings against Johnston, and he arrived at her apartment Tuesday night and forced entry.
“She told them he put a .22-caliber revolver to her head and threatened to kill her and then himself,” Shupe said. “But when he pulled the trigger, the gun jammed. He then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed himself in the neck.”
The woman alleged he then forced her and their 2-year-old child into his vehicle. She was driving and managed to talk him into going to the hospital as he was bleeding profusely.
“He was treated at the hospital, given a psychological evaluation and released into the custody of our deputies,” Shupe said. “He is charged with two misdemeanors and seven felonies in conjunction with the incident.”
Johnston is facing charges of stalking, hindering a 911 call, criminal damage to property, burglary, aggravated assault, two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and false imprisonment.
